INTRODUCTION

          Relevance of the Topic. Verbs are an essential component of language that allow us to express actions, states, and relationships between various entities. They form the backbone of communication, enabling us to convey our thoughts, intentions, and experiences effectively. One particular category of verbs that has garnered significant attention and interest among linguists and language scholars is that of "Verbs of Extended Modalities." These verbs go beyond the basic notions of possibility, necessity, and ability commonly associated with modal verbs, and they offer a broader range of nuanced meanings and functions.

          Modal verbs are a class of verbs that express modalities such as possibility, necessity, ability, permission, and volition. Examples of commonly recognized modal verbs include "can," "could," "may," "might," "must," "shall," "should," "will," "would," and "ought to." These verbs serve as linguistic tools for indicating degrees of likelihood, obligation, permission, and other similar concepts. However, within the realm of language, there are verbs that extend beyond these basic modalities, providing speakers with additional shades of meaning and expression.

          Verbs of extended modalities refer to a group of verbs that possess both modal and non-modal characteristics. These verbs exhibit a wider range of functions, incorporating elements such as uncertainty, speculation, attitude, and evaluative judgment. Unlike traditional modal verbs, verbs of extended modalities allow speakers to express their subjective perspective, emotional stance, and subtle nuances of meaning.

          Verbs of extended modalities encompass a diverse array of lexical items that enrich the expressive capacity of a language. These verbs often carry connotations of possibility, desirability, expectation, and hypothetical scenarios. Some common examples of verbs falling under this category include "seem," "appear," "believe," "think," "imagine," "guess," "suppose," "presume," "doubt," "wonder," and "consider." These verbs offer speakers the ability to express their viewpoints, beliefs, and uncertainties, thereby enabling more nuanced and contextually appropriate communication.

          The study of verbs of extended modalities holds significant linguistic importance. Understanding these verbs and their usage patterns enhances our comprehension of how language functions, how meanings are conveyed, and how interpersonal communication is shaped.

          The object of research for this coursework is the category of verbs of extended modalities.

          The subject of research in this coursework is the analysis of verbs of extended modalities in various linguistic contexts.

          The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the distinct features and functions of these verbs, exploring their role in expressing subjective perspectives, attitudes, evaluations, and uncertainties, by investigating their usage patterns, the research seeks to enhance our comprehension of how these verbs contribute to effective communication.

          In accordance with the purpose of the study, the following tasks were defined:

          1) to give the definition and characteristics of extended modalities;

          2) to determine the importance of verbs in expressing extended modalities;

          3) to determine the role of verbs in conveying nuanced meanings and attitudes;

          4) to analyze Verbs of Extended Modalities in Thesaurus.com;

          5) to carry out an examination of Verbs of Extended Modalities in Merriam-Webster.com;

          6) to research of Verbs of Extended Modalities in CollinsDictionary.com;

          7) to make a comparison of verb usages across the three dictionaries;

          8) to identify commonalities and differences in definitions and nuances;

          9) to analyze cultural and linguistic variations in the expression of extended modalities.

          Research Methods. To achieve the research objectives, a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods will be employed. The qualitative approach involves conducting a comprehensive literature review to gather existing knowledge on verbs of extended modalities. This will be supplemented by corpus analysis, which entails analyzing real-world language data to identify patterns, collocations, and contextual usage of these verbs. Additionally, interviews or surveys with native speakers and language experts may be conducted to gain insights into their perceptions and interpretations of these verbs.

          The scientific novelty of this research lies in its focus on the category of verbs of extended modalities and their linguistic significance. While traditional modal verbs have been extensively studied, this research seeks to expand the understanding of verbs that possess both modal and non-modal characteristics. By examining their usage in different linguistic contexts, the study aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in linguistics, offering new insights into the expressive capacity of language and the role of verbs in communication. The findings of this research have the potential to enrich our understanding of language structure, cognitive processes, and intercultural communication.

          Coursework structure. The coursework consists of an introduction, three sections, conclusions and references.

CONCLUSIONS

          The analysis of verbs of extended modalities across three dictionaries, namely Merriam-Webster.com, CollinsDictionary.com, and Thesaurus.com, has shed light on the nuances and variations in their definitions, usage, and connotations. Through a comprehensive examination of these dictionaries, several key conclusions can be drawn regarding the nature and characteristics of verbs of extended modalities.

          Firstly, the study revealed that verbs of extended modalities are dynamic linguistic tools that allow speakers and writers to express a range of nuanced meanings and attitudes. These verbs go beyond the realm of simple necessity or possibility and encompass a broader spectrum of shades, including probability, desirability, obligation, and permission. They enable speakers to convey subtle nuances and express complex ideas related to the subjective evaluation of actions, events, and states.

          Secondly, the comparison of verb usages across the three dictionaries highlighted both similarities and differences in their coverage and emphasis. While there were commonalities in the definitions and examples provided, each dictionary presented unique perspectives and nuances in their treatment of verbs of extended modalities. Merriam-Webster.com, for instance, focused on precise definitions and usage examples, CollinsDictionary.com provided contextual and idiomatic usages, and Thesaurus.com offered extensive synonyms and related words.

          Thirdly, the analysis of cultural and linguistic variations in the expression of extended modalities revealed the influence of cultural contexts and linguistic traditions on verb usage. Different cultures and languages may have specific verb choices and idiomatic expressions to convey similar nuances of meaning. Understanding these variations is essential for effective communication and cross-cultural understanding, as it allows for the recognition and interpretation of the cultural and linguistic subtleties embedded within verb usage.

          Fourthly, the utilization of online dictionaries, such as Merriam-Webster.com, CollinsDictionary.com, and Thesaurus.com, proved to be valuable resources for studying verbs of extended modalities. These digital platforms provide convenient access to a wide range of lexical information, including definitions, examples, synonyms, antonyms, and related words. Researchers, language learners, and individuals interested in studying extended modalities can benefit from the comprehensive and user-friendly features offered by these online dictionaries.

          In conclusion, the analysis of verbs of extended modalities in the three dictionaries has demonstrated the richness and complexity of these linguistic constructs. They allow speakers to express nuanced meanings and attitudes, and their usage varies across cultural and linguistic contexts. The comparison of verb usages across the dictionaries and the utilization of online resources have provided valuable insights into the definitions, examples, and nuances associated with verbs of extended modalities. Further research and exploration in this area can contribute to a deeper understanding of language usage and cross-cultural communication.
