INTRODUCTION
The study of prepositions is an
essential aspect of learning the English language, as they are integral to the
formation of sentences and conveying meaning. However, teaching prepositions
can be a challenging task as they can be abstract and difficult to grasp for
learners. To make the learning experience more engaging and enjoyable, an
innovative approach to teaching prepositions can be taken by incorporating a
literary text such as "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
"The Secret Garden" is a
beloved classic novel that tells the story of a young girl named Mary Lennox
who moves to England from India to live with her uncle in a large and
mysterious mansion. In the novel, prepositions are used to describe the
setting, characters, and events, providing learners with a unique opportunity
to see how prepositions function in a literary context. By examining how
prepositions are used in "The Secret Garden," learners can gain a
deeper understanding of their meaning and functions in the English language.
The use of literature in language
learning has been shown to be an effective and engaging approach. According to
a study conducted by Dr. Elizabeth J. Erling and Dr. Philip Seargeant,
incorporating literary texts in language teaching can improve language learning
outcomes by providing learners with a cultural context and opportunities for critical
thinking. The study also found that the use of literature can enhance learners'
language skills and overall language proficiency.
By using "The Secret Garden"
as a basis for teaching prepositions, learners can not only improve their
language skills but also develop a deeper appreciation for the novel's language
and meaning. This approach provides learners with a meaningful and engaging
context in which to apply their knowledge of prepositions, making the learning
experience more enjoyable and effective.
The incorporation of a literary text
such as "The Secret Garden" in teaching prepositions represents a
novel and innovative approach to language learning. By examining how
prepositions are used in the context of the novel, learners can gain a deeper
understanding of their meaning and functions while simultaneously developing
critical thinking skills and appreciation for literature. This approach can
enhance learners' language skills and overall language proficiency, making it
an effective and engaging way to teach prepositions.
The
objective of our
investigation is the substantiation of correlation of form and content of
functions of prepositions in English language by means of establishing the
peculiarities of the given categories of the prepositions.
For the achievement of the objective
the following tasks have been put:
- to study the theoretical material about the meaning
and functions of prepositions;
- to define the meaning and functions
of prepositions in English literature;
-
to determine the peculiarities of prepositions;
-to illustrate the ways of their usage
in the book “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
The
object of our
investigation is the process of correlation of the meaning and functions of
prepositions.
The
subject of the research
is peculiarities of usage of the main categories and types of prepositions in
English literature.
The
material for the given
investigation is a novel “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a
famous Anglo-American novelist of the late 19th century.
The
methodology of our
investigation is based upon the methods of analysis, synthesis and consecutive
selection.
Introduction grounds the actuality of the problem, the objective
and tasks of the investigation, discovers its object and subject, the materials
and methods used to achieve the objective and explains the structure of the
research work.

theoretical preconditions of the investigation: it consists of the analyses of
different approaches to the starting of the meaning and functions of
prepositions and gives the general outlook on the problem.

CONCLUSIONS
In conclusion, prepositions play a
crucial role in the English language, serving various grammatical functions
such as indicating time, location, manner, and cause, among others. Through a
detailed analysis of "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett,
it is evident that prepositions contribute significantly to the
characterization, setting, and atmosphere of the novel. This coursework has
provided valuable insights into the meaning and functions of prepositions in
the English language, highlighting the importance of understanding their usage
in literature and everyday communication.
The study has also shown that
prepositions can be challenging to learn for non-native speakers of English, as
they often have multiple meanings and complex usage patterns. Therefore, it is
essential to approach prepositions systematically and learn them in context to
develop a deep understanding of their meanings and functions.
Furthermore, this coursework has shown
that prepositions can be used creatively to add nuance and depth to language.
For instance, in "The Secret Garden," prepositions are often used to
convey emotional states and the relationship between characters, providing a
window into their inner thoughts and feelings. By mastering prepositions,
writers can achieve a greater level of precision and subtlety in their writing,
creating more vivid and immersive narratives.
Finally, it is worth noting that
prepositions are not limited to literary usage but are also essential in
everyday communication. The correct use of prepositions can significantly
affect the clarity and meaning of spoken and written language, making it
essential to understand their various functions and meanings.
In conclusion, the study of
prepositions is a critical aspect of learning English, and their mastery can
greatly enhance one's ability to communicate effectively in both written and
spoken language. Through an analysis of "The Secret Garden," this
coursework has provided a detailed understanding of the meaning and functions
of prepositions in the English language, highlighting their importance in
literary and everyday communication.
In the novel "The Secret
Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett, prepositions play a significant role
in conveying meaning and establishing relationships between different elements
of a sentence. Through an analysis of the text, it is evident that certain
prepositions prevail, while others are used less frequently.
Among the prevailing prepositions in
the novel are "in," "on," "at," and
"to." These prepositions are used extensively to indicate location,
direction, and time. For example, phrases like "in the garden,"
"on the wall," "at the door," and "to the house"
are recurrent throughout the narrative. These prepositions contribute to the
vivid descriptions of the setting and the characters' movements within the
story.
Another prevalent preposition in the
novel is "of," which signifies possession or relationship. It is
frequently used to express ownership or belonging, as seen in phrases like
"the key of the garden" or "the cries of the birds." The
preposition "of" helps establish connections between different
elements and emphasizes the interconnectedness of characters and objects within
the story.
Additionally, the prepositions
"with" and "from" are commonly used in the novel to
indicate association or origin. Phrases such as "with her friends" or
"from the moor" demonstrate how these prepositions contribute to the
development of character relationships and the portrayal of the characters'
backgrounds.
On the other hand, certain
prepositions are used less frequently in the novel. Prepositions such as
"beyond," "among," "under," or "over"
appear infrequently compared to the prevailing prepositions. These prepositions
may be used to denote more specific or limited spatial relationships or are
simply less relevant to the particular context of the story.
In conclusion, the analysis of prepositions in the novel "The Secret Garden" reveals the prevalence of certain prepositions such as "in," "on," "at," "to," and "of," which are extensively used to convey location, direction, possession, and relationship. These prepositions contribute to the rich descriptions and provide a clear understanding of the spatial and temporal aspects of the story. While other prepositions are used less frequently, they serve more specific purposes or have limited relevance within the narrative. Understanding the meaning and functions of prepositions enhances our comprehension of the English language and helps us appreciate the author's use of language to create a vivid and engaging story.
